In 1992, Leadership Greensboro Seniors (an organization then affiliated with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce) began supporting two annual food drives, in the spring and fall, to benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry. LGS brought together local congregations and grocery stores to work together to collect food donated by shoppers for Greensboro Urban Ministry’s Food Pantry.
Today some three dozen organizations and grocery stores participate. The drives are a major food sources for the Greensboro Urban Ministry and allow the agency’s Emergency Assistance Program to distribute food to 100+ households a day.
In early 2015, the Leadership Greensboro Seniors’ Food Drive became affiliated directly with Greensboro Urban Ministry. Now called the #FeedGSO Community Food Drives, these events will continue to take place in spring and fall. The drives are outstanding examples of how the faith community, businesses and community members can work together to help those who are hungry.
